MUDD FUN FACTS
Under Buildings and Alumni: “The water tower outside of Sontag was built before Mudd in the early 1900’s in the architectural style of Scripps”.
The class to graduate in 1962 informed founding President Dr. Joseph Platt that they felt “deprived of flesh and spirits” (Harvey Mudd College, The First Twenty Years, page 55). The college met them halfway; women’s hours in the dorms came about, albeit with a “book in the door and four feet on the floor at all times”. The book was easy (match book); the other requirement took more innovation!
However, the campus remained dry, we wanted to have a real party, and we decided the abandoned building in the brush across Mills Avenue was “off campus” (Mills Ave extended from from 12th to Foothill, only dorms were West, East and North; Pitzer did not yet exist).
Next time you pass the water tower notice the doors are hinged outside. We removed the pins on the side away from Mills Ave, took off the doors, cleaned up the interior, used a car battery to drive a record player and sound equipment, set up a bar, and had some great parties!
